Synopsis

There are three stories, running through the play.

Owen takes a booking for Wednesday night, despite being told by his wife not to do so. He therefore has to hide this from her. Tracy is inveigled into acting as waitress for the night but gradually gets drunk, thus causing chaos to descend on the poor unfortunate couple who have made the booking.

At the same time, Pat seems to have something to hide. Why is she not available to cook on Wednesday night? Where has she gone instead? Does she have a secret lover and if so, who can it be?

Finally, there is the Mysterious Stranger who keeps coming into the pub and making notes. Is he someone for Owen to worry about?

The Cast List

Owen: The landlord of the Beaumont Arms public house. A world-class snob who thinks he knows everything but who in reality, knows very little. He believes he rules the roost but his wife is the real power behind the throne.
Pat: Owen’s wife. A total battleaxe who takes no nonsense from anyone. She is the one who is really in charge.
Jester: A pub regular who has no visible means of support. Always ducking and diving and always just inside the law, or at least he hasn’t been caught yet! Fancies himself as a ladies man and has desires to get much closer to Tracy. Does odd-jobs around the pub.
Roger: The barman and cellarman. Ex RAF he talks little about his military service, implying perhaps that he saw action. In fact he never came closer than the NAAFI.
Tracy: The pub cleaner and general dogsbody who helps out where she is needed. She is young and rather stupid. Her dress-sense explains all that she is; her jeans are always just a little too tight, her skirt a little too short and her blouses a little too low-cut.
Wilf: Pub regular and the village elder. Probably born old, no-one now knows just what his age really is. Drinks like a fish.
Mr Fanshaw M.P.: A distinguished gentleman who is the local Member of Parliament and just happens to live on the outskirts of the village.
Mrs Fanshaw: The wife of the M.P. Elegant and smart. She is a typical “country” type who goes in for shooting, horses and valium.
Mysterious Stranger: Must be male. Can really be any age
